Merrill began his career in the accounting profession as a student trainee for HR Doane and Company, now Grant Thornton International, and worked with them for 7 years. He obtained his CA designation in 1990 and moved back to Sydney in 1992. In November 1992, he joined a Glace Bay CA Firm as a partner and was responsible for approximately 80 clients in various industries, managing staff and all administrative functions. Merrill has been working for the past 17 years in the CBRM in various business advisory roles.

In December 2002, Merrill sold his share of the practice and joined the management team of a local high-tech company as CFO. In August of 2005, he left this company and began providing controllership and business advisory services to small and medium sized businesses in the industrial Cape Breton area. The focus has been on providing these services to companies that do not have the financial resources for a full-time controller but require assistance in preparation of timely financial statements, cash flow and strategic planning.


A brief history of Ledgers:


Ledgers was conceptualized by a team of Professional Accountants from Sydney Nova Scotia when the need for consistent, professional and affordable accounting and bookkeeping services was recognized.

After a preliminary investigation, it was realized that the small business market could not afford the services available from the CPA’s and larger firms, while services from the local ‘bookkeeper’ were not adequate.
